Day 26 – Travel

As a language student, I’ve spent a lot of the last year travelling and most of the rest of my time talking about it…

I didn’t want to write a travel blog or use this site just as a place to reminisce but today I’d like to share a few of the best things about Moscow! πŸ‡·πŸ‡Ί

I know that no one really factors Russia into their holiday plans on the reg.

You need a visa, there will be a language barrier, everyone is convinced Russia is scary etc etc πŸ€” but stay with me because it’s SUCH an interesting country and Moscow is well worth a visit. Here are a few reasons why:

  • The architecture

When you mention Moscow, everyone thinks about the Kremlin and St Basil’s Cathedral and for good reason, they’re gorgeous:

But also, look at the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour:

Moscow State University:

The State Duma:

The White House:

Moskva City:

  • Transport – it’s not a stereotypically sexy reason to go to a place but in Moscow you can get around so easily and it’s actually a pleasure!

You can take the metro – just look at the art:

Look at the ingenious layout *gasp*

And if you take the light blue line from Alexandrovsky Sad you can see the White House and Moskva City from the window! P.s it’s so cheap to use 🏧

You can get to St Petersburg on the Sapsan train in 4h and the journey is gorgeous πŸ›€πŸš„

Also, after the metro stops running around 1am, the Yandex taxi app is excellent and cheap and there is also Uber πŸ™Œ

  • The museums:

You can learn about architecture at the Shchusev museum, history at the State Historical Museum, visit the State Armoury and Diamond funds in the Kremlin, learn about space at the Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics, or see a 360 painting of the Battle of Borodino

Also you can visit every single one of these galleries!

  • The food

For Russian food, visit Kafe Pushkin

For Georgian food try Jon Joli or Π‘Π°Ρ‚ΠΎΠ½ΠΈ (Batoni) at Novoslobodskaya:

Experience the best, inexpensive sushi I’ve ever had at Yakitoriya, a chain all over the city BC Russia is obsessed with Japanese food. They do amazing hot rolls as well 🍱🍱

Moscow has excellent vegetarian and vegan restaurants, I spent a lot of time in both Fresh and Avocado πŸ‰

Another great food place is Danilovsky Market, there are small stalls, hot food and baked goods.

  • The hangouts

Ziferblat cafe on Tverskaya is cosy and adorable and you pay by the minute, not per drink. At 2 roubles per minute (around 2p) you can have a coffee and go and spend 30 pence!

Gorky Park

ВДНΠ₯ park

The cafes and restaurants near Belorusskaya are also great for relaxing with friends 😍

Bar Strelka has a great view of the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour and also a MOZZARELLA BAR πŸ™Œ

  • The shopping:

Internationally famous GUM on Red Square is particularly beautiful at Christmas.

The underground shopping centre ΠžΡ…ΠΎΡ‚Π½Ρ‹ΠΉ ряд near Red Square has everything you could need, even a great organic cosmetics shop and it has very cool architecture:

Central Detskiy Mir is a shopping centre for children, it is full of toys with a cinema at the top and an incredible view from the roof 🎈

  • There are excellent events!

You can see the ballet at the Bolshoi or the Kremlin theatre, watch a musical, visit the ice cream festival, go into the streets to celebrate Victory Day (it is difficult to comprehend the sheer number of weapons of war paraded but it’s massively important in the Russian calendar), visit the Christmas and New Year market on Red Square, and then the Easter market, or even look around the summer fish festival 🐟🐠

I’m sure I’ll write about Moscow again because it is huge and there is so much more to say!

Thank you for reading πŸ˜πŸ‡·πŸ‡ΊπŸ™Œ

Day 24 – Christmas Nails

It’s been a busy week… 4 exams and 3 tutor meetings later, it’s finally the end of the semester!

Now we can go FULL CHRISTMAS πŸ˜πŸŽ„πŸŽ…

I’ve already had enough mulled wine, prosecco, mince pies and hot chocolate to get in the spirit of things so here are the best ideas for festive nails that I could find on Pinterest!

Happy Saturday πŸŽ„πŸŽ…β›„

Day 23 – Neon

As you might have noticed from my blog header, I’m quite a fan of the neon artist Jung Lee and in the interests of not writing about Christmas again (for the third time this week πŸŽ…πŸŽ„πŸŽ) I’m going to share some neon art with you instead!

Neon art lies somewhere in the intersection between poetry, sculpture, landscape photography and street art. Neon artists can also use light and colour in a way that isn’t seen through any other medium. It’s worth reading this article in Complex to discover more amazing artists than I’ve included in this post.

Here are a few of my favourites and examples of their beautiful work! 😊

Robert Montgomery:

Tracy Emin:

Massimo Uberti:

Tim Etchells:

Gavin Turk:

Pacifico Palumbo:

Have a great evening πŸ˜πŸ™ŒπŸŒˆ

Day 22 – Christmas Decor

It’s almost the end of term and I’m sliding down a slippery slope at full speed towards Christmas πŸŽ„πŸŽ
Today I’ve spent an unhealthy amout of time looking at easy, inexpensive ideas for Christmas decorations!

Here are my favourite few πŸ˜πŸ™Œ

  • This little vase of lights

  • These giant pine cones

  • These paper Christmas trees!

  • And these as well

  • These simple hanging wreaths

  • And their red ribboned cousins!

  • This artsy string of baubles

  • This easy peasy garland

  • These decorated branches in vases

  • These candles in mugs (I’d keep an eye on these at all times)

  • This giant candle in a vase!

  • These tiny little Christmas trees in corks

  • This glorious bowl of silver decorations

  • And this dramatic row of candles and berries!

Happy decorating!

P.s thank you for the inspiration πŸŽ…β›„

Day 21 – Christmas Jumpers! πŸŽ…

Foodie week is over and I’ve fallen headfirst into the festive spirit!

Let’s discuss Christmas jumpers. Everyone has one, everyone loves them and whether you wear them ironically or just because they are unbelievably cute, chances are they’ll get you in the holiday spirit πŸŽ„πŸŽ…β›„

Unfortunately for us all, the internet has waged war on this most clichΓ© of Christmas traditions and festive jumpers are no longer the cheesy, Mark-Darcy-from-Bridget-Jones extravaganza they once were…

So here’s a list of 11 jumpers that got too cool for Christmas… I’m looking at you, Pinterest πŸ˜‰

P.s. They’re all on my list, Santa πŸŽ…

Day 20 – Mini Festive Treats!

Food week is coming to an end and I don’t know about you but I think it’s time for a list of festive recipes.

Christmas is such a sweet time of year that I’ve decided to find a few ideas for easy sweet treats for you!

Bonus: most of them are just an assembly job so you can focus on having all the Christmas fun outside the kitchen πŸŽ„πŸ˜πŸ¬

Enjoy β›„πŸŽ

  • Or line with melted chocolate and then fill them with milk for the kids and Bailey’s for yourself / Santa πŸŽ…

    • Make your peanut butter cups into Santas! You don’t even need a recipe for this one πŸ™Œ

    • Another idea with no recipe – make your peanut butter cups and Hershey’s kisses into Christmas trees! (Don’t worry everyone, you can get Hershey’s kisses in the UK too)

    SO CUTE 🌈

    • Cut brownies into triangles, ice and cover in sprinkled and finish with a candy cane!

    • Cut your biscuit dough into different sized flowers and stack them up with icing or marshmallow fluff!

    • This ultimate easy peasy nutella cheesecake isn’t mini but it is a crowd pleaser and you can put loads of Christmassy sprinkles on it or line Ferrero Rochers around the edge 😍

As ever, thank you to everyone for the photos, inspiration and recipes πŸ’›πŸ’›
